Theory and Debates

The Run tier is for readers who want the ideas underneath the policies. It assumes you have already met the definitions in the taxonomy and seen the real-world examples in the case studies. We abbreviate democratic socialism as DemSoc after this first mention. These four pages are denser than the rest of the site, but they still define their terms, and they present the disagreements inside the tradition as live rather than settled.

A suggested reading order runs from history, to the central question of the site, to the mechanics, to the objections. You can also read any page on its own.

Historical lineage

Where the tradition comes from, and the one split that shaped it. It answers the question: how did a democratic road to socialism come to define itself against the authoritarian one? Read this first for context.

Coexistence with capitalism

The founding question of this site. It answers: can DemSoc share an economy with capitalism, and is doing so a destination or a stepping stone? This is where the internal disagreement is sharpest.

Market socialism

How social ownership might work with markets rather than central planning. It answers: what would it mean to own firms socially but still let them compete? This is the main attempt to combine markets and social ownership.

Critiques and responses

The strongest objections to DemSoc, each paired with the strongest response and with what remains unresolved. It answers: what should an honest reader still worry about? Read this last, because it draws on all the others.
